Recent obsessions

Sorry for the blog hiatus peeps- been a busy week! Regular blogging will resume tomorrow, but for now I thought I’d share some of my recent obsessions with all of you.

I purchased a similar grapefruit body scrub from Whole Foods last week and I love the scent and the soft skin that results after use. This cold winter + my dry skin = much needed TLC.

This fun print is giving my living room a nice pop of color. You can buy one from Furbish Studio- only $35!

My poor Mizuno running shoes were in dire need of replacement. Enter this Brooks pair- they are lightweight, sleek and surprisingly cushiony (is that a word?). Great for long runs and interval workouts.

In preparation for the Oscars this weekend, please don’t miss out on this ADORABLE and HILARIOUS Tumblr re-creating movie shots with his/her adorable children. That watch..I can’t even. I. Can’t. Even.

Signs you are in your late 20s

On the same day, you:

  • Become a Sustainer for your local npr station (WUNC is my jam)
  • Stake out Beyonce tickets online while on the phone with Ticketmaster and swear aggressively when they sell out in .5 minutes as your computer screen freezes. And then consider the options of the $2k box at the arena because really when are you ever going to get to see Beyonce perform live?

What you see here is Grammy award-winner Frank Ocean and his pet corgi. I’m still doing research on the name of said corgi- stay tuned. Just further proof that corgis are a pretty boss choice for a pet.

Happy Valentine’s Day to my sweet, wonderful husband who makes sure each day together is better than the last through his good humor, generosity and warmth. I’m so lucky to call you mine.

DIY: Thrifted wooden trash can

I checked out my local Goodwill this week and spied this wooden trash can for $1.99. What sealed the deal for me were the lion pulls.

The wood was very sad and tired and the lion pulls needed some sparkle. I decided it would go in our powder room, and wanted to paint it something bold. Immediately, I thought of a pretty Chinese red and went to my favorite blog for DIYs, Little Green Notebook, to see what paint blogger Jenny recommended. Her pick? Safety Red by Rustoleum (also Nick Olsen’s first choice.)

I started the project off with sanding the trash can inside and outside. I wiped off the dust and removed the lion pulls. The lions were spray painted Rustoleum metallic gold and put aside.

The Safety Red was a bitch to use- you have to point the can downward to work (instead of upright), rendering my handy spray gun useless. The paint went everywhere and I had to take a little break to prevent a complete and total meltdown a temper tantrum. Composed, I tried again and had more success with the stupid can.  The outside took about three coats, inside two coats. Then I sprayed clear gloss enamel to protect the wood and make it shiny.

Final product! I’m happy with the way it turned out- and the entire project cost $8. Have you found any good thrifting finds lately?

One day I’d love to have a Lulie Wallace painting in my home. I adore her use of colors- just seeing this image is lifting my spirits today! Lulie is also on Tumblr (can I also say I wish my name was something awesome like Lulie?) where you can keep up to date on her most recent work.

My very in-the-know friend Melissa told me about a DIY turmeric face mask that’s supposed to make your skin glow-using ingredients commonly found in your fridge and kitchen cabinets. I’m definitely going to give this a try this week and will let you know how it goes!

We’re meeting with a mortgage broker tonight to discuss the process of buying a house. I already feel poor.

Weekend Excellence

Helloooo Monday. Hope everyone had a great weekend! I was home alone, which meant I spent two days re-arranging our home, reading a bunch of shelter magazines, eating candy for meals and passing out at 9:30 at night. So..like best weekend ever. I hit up the Flea Market and found some great items for really low prices. #ballingonabudget. I put my fancy pants on and attended the Triangle Wine Experience on Saturday night, sporting a beautiful necklace from Hyla DeWitt who graciously loaned it to me for the event.
